Hemp-derived CBD oil has grown significantly in popularity, trust and use since becoming legal in all 50 states in recent years. It has been linked to therapeutic effects such as pain, stress, and anxiety relief and the effectiveness of its use in treating symptoms associated with mental health disorders such as chronic anxiety, PSTD and even ADHD is growing in research amongst the scientific community.
What is ADHD?
According to the Attention Deficit Disorder Association, ADHD is a “brain-based syndrome that has to do with the regulation of a particular set of brain functions and related behaviors.” These cognitive brain functions include memory, concentration and attention. Those suffering from ADHD may find it difficult to focus, have trouble listening, be easily distracted or need constant reminders to fulfill duties. It’s caused by chemical and structural differences in the brain and has been closely tied to genetics.
ADHD can occur in both adolescents and adults and can be treated with a combination of medicine and therapy. The therapy usually includes a type of behavioral modification which can retrain the brain to overcome common obstacles those with ADHD usually face. Adolescents usually have a more difficult time with behavioral therapy, which leads to medicine becoming the most viable option; however, medicine can cause unwanted side effects (sleep issues, loss of appetite, etc).
Can CBD Oil Used to Treat ADHD?
While there has not yet been a conclusive study that has linked CBD oil to ADHD treatment, a trial performed in 2017 tested cannabinoid on individuals of the disorder and saw improvements in associated symptoms. The results suggested that adults who take the cannabinoid experience the side effects less than the children. Dr. David Bearman, a leading physician in the world of medical marijuana, is currently looking into the effects of cannabinoids as it relates to ADHD. He says that the potential therapeutic value is tangible.
Further studies are still necessary to better understand the science behind CBD as it relates to the symptoms of ADHD. A quick search on the web will result in plenty of forums, bloggers, and groups that have tried and tested CBD oil for their ADHD symptoms with positive results. That said, most of the evidence that shows a correlation, exists anecdotally. There are even some who claim it helps improve mood and boost mental clarity.
While the outlook on CBD and ADHD looks promising, there are more large-scale studies needed to understand the effects of cannabinoid oil in the system. If CBD oil is something you are considering for yourself or a family member to aid with ADHD symptoms, it’s important to do the proper research before purchasing a high-quality product. It’s important to talk to a physician if you are considering introducing a new supplement into your regimen.
